Registration and Training Process

In order to gain access to IHIC equipment, new users will need to go through a registration and training process as explained below.

Step 1 Project Consultation with IHIC staff
  • We will discuss your imaging project and identify the most suitable instrument and approach for your project.
  • If you are a new researcher it is VITAL that your supervisor attends this meeting.
  • For soft samples (bio, engineering) contact Prof Eric Hanssen to set up a meeting
  • For hard samples (material, some engineering) contact A/Prof Sergey Rubanov to set up a meeting
Step 2 iLab registration
  • ilab booking system
    • Every instrument booking and training registration will be done via iLab.
    • Both you and your supervisor should register to iLab.

Step 3 Registration form
  • Follow an online training with myscope
  • Follow a radiation safety training (For UoM Trainme module, for other institutions your own training certificate is fine)
  • Login to ilab
  • Navigate to  the Ian Holmes Imaging Centre
  • Choose  the "request Service" tab
  • Click on initiate request on the right of "Registration"
  • Fill in the details
    • For UoM groups select which Workday tag is to be used by default for future booking
    • For Non UoM  add an Open Purchase Order that will be use for our Quarterly billing
  • Select which instrument(s)/Workflow(s) you want to use
  • Attach the necessary certificated (OGTR, myscope and radiation training)
  • Submit
  • Emailing the IHIC staff dedicated to your training to let them know you are good to go.
Step 4 Arrange training session
  • Once the form has been submitted, IHIC staff will check it and arrange training sessions. Note: ensure all documents are completed before submission to avoid any further delay.
  • Depending on your instrument of choice training will happen in steps and may require yo to be trained on feeder instruments (eg . If you select the Krios you will likely be trained on the L120C and the  Arctica)
Step 5 Instrument Training
  • The steps below are a guide only and may change depending on your individual circumstances
  • Session #1 (training rate applies): We will give an introduction to the microscope likely using a test sample. Face-to-face session demonstration focuses on
    • hardware and software setup
    • optimising the acquisition settings
  • Session #2: In this session, you will be operating the microscope, and we will be providing support. Session is with your own samples to assist you with creating a microscope configuration that is specific to your sample. You will receive guidance in how to optimise acquisition settings for your sample.
  • After second training session, we will verify your competency in performing essential microscopy techniques. If needed, further sessions can be organized at the trainer’s discretion.
  • If we have deemed you competent, we will give you an independent access to the booking calendar and finalise training steps
Step 6 Building Access
  • When you training is complete ask teh staff member responsible for your training to give you access to lab using your staff card, you will need to provide them with your staff/student Id
  • For non UoM staff/Student you will need to get a temperary access card at Bio21 reception for each session you have on our microscopes
  • Note: access is a priviledge and may be canceled if you do not respect the rules of use of the facility.
Step 7 Enjoy
  • Once your trinaing and access are organise feel free to use the microscopes as much as you can as quickly as you can to not forget what you have just learn
  • If you need more info or help on the microscope do not hesiate to contact your trainer or any IHIC staff member
  • There is always a "Duty Microscopist" you can reach out to in case you are stuck. DO NOT WAIT HOURS  in front of the microscope poundering what you need to do. Ask we are here to help.
